The Facilities and Maintenance section of the Engineering Department consists of a multi-national workforce responsible for the operation and maintenance of all buildings, estates and non-medical equipment appertaining to the hospital, its associated satellite clinics and staff housing complexes.
Our engineering services are administered utilizing the latest in Building Management System technology, computerised planned preventive maintenance scheduling and routine maintenance procedures.
Our services include the storage (10,000m3 of Lox) and distribution of medical oxygen, medical air and vacuum. The storage (11,000m3) and distribution of cold water, the production and distribution of hot water (utilizing steam to water calorifiers). The production and distribution of steam generated by two steam raising plants with a total capacity of 10,000 kg/hr of steam. There are 40 AHUs supplied with 2,800 tonnes of centralized cooling, augmented by numerous packaged, split and window type air conditioning units in peripheral buildings. The distribution of both HV and LV through a ring main network, all telecommunication facilities, incorporating PABXs, bleep systems and ground-to-air radio. The operation of 6 fully automated emergency diesel generators producing 3.8 MW of power, and seven elevators serving the four floors of the main hospital.
Biomedical Engineering is part of the Operation & Maintenance Department in the hospital. This multinational force maintains over 5,700 medical equipment units situated within the hospital and three of its Satellite Clinics.
The role of BME is threaded throughout the hospital Programme and is qualified to participate in every phase of the equipment cycle, from its introduction into the clinical areas to its final retirement. BME matches these skills with their knowledge of the hospitals technology deployment phases, ranging from acceptance testing, to performance validation, user training, inventory control, repair and maintenance services.
BME improves the management of existing equipment inventory, thus impacting a high quality of care in the following areas:
Additionally, BME plays an active role in the supervision of all services provided by external medical equipment contractors and suppliers.
