The function of the Tissue Typing section is to crossmatch and Tissue Type donor kidneys (live-related and cadaver) with possible recipients to find good compatibility. Cytotoxic antibody screening is performed on all recipients. This is part of the hospital Kidney Transplant Program. The tests performed use serological techniques.
We also perform Flow Cytometry using a Becton Dickinson Facscan machine, running panels to differentiate between different types of Leukaemia (ALL, AML, CLL and CML), and carry out T-cell subset (Helper CD4/Suppressor CD8 ratios) for all HIV cases.
Presently, this section is undergoing development but workload is expected to rise sharply with the appointment of a new Consultant Oncology Haematologist and a Consultant Haematopathologist.
